Resolve a partnership deadlock on Windows
Mobile 6
Table of contents
Article summary
A Windows Mobile 6 device may encounter a
situation where partnerships with two separate PCs exist, but are
recreated each time you change from one PC to the other.
This article describes how this issue can be
resolved.
Warning: This includes modifying the PCs and
the devices
registries. Unintended changes to the registry may render your
PC/device completely inoperable.

Detailed
problem description
Under some rare circumstances where two
partnerships are used, ActiveSync partnership settings on a
Windows Mobile 6 device may become unstable. A single
partnership seems to work well, but if the device is connected to the
second PC, the device tells you that it does not have a valid
partnership with this PC. You have the option to create a new, fresh
partnership. If you do this, and then reconnect the device to
the first PC, the same thing happens over there.
Though it is possible to recreate
partnerships each time you change from one PC to the other, an
effective synchronization between the device and both PCs is not possible.
Deleting all partnerships on the device or
the PCs, as well as reinstalling ActiveSync, do not solve the
problem.

Solution
To resolve this issue, all references to the
defective partnerships must be completely deleted on both PCs
and on the device itself.
You need a registry editor for
Windows Mobile 6. We recommend CeRegEditor by mdSoft. This tool
does not require installation on the device itself, but only on
a PC. And it includes a soft reset function which is very useful.
CeRegEditor can be downloaded here:
http://ceregeditor.mdsoft.pl/
If you have a registry editor installed, follow
this procedure:
-
On both PCs:
-
Use ActiveSync to remove the partnership
to the respective device. Partnerships to other devices may
be left as they are.
-
Using Windows Explorer, open the
"\Documents and Settings" folder, open your own subfolder,
then navigate to
"Application Data\Microsoft\ActiveSync\Profiles".
-
If there is a subfolder with the name of
your device, delete it.
-
Open regedit.exe and navigate to the
following key:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows CE Services\Partners\
-
There may be one or more subkeys with
names like "17b8599f" or such. Check "DisplayName" inside
each key. If it matches your devices name, delete the subkey
completely.
-
Reboot the PC to properly reinitialize
ActiveSync.
-
On the Windows Mobile device:
-
Use ActiveSync to remove all
partnerships. Try the menu item "Options", then select
each
partnership and use the menu again to delete.
-
Use your registry editor to navigate to
the following key (on the PDA's/smartphone's registry, NOT on the PC's
registry):
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\ActiveSync\Partners\
If you use a PC based registry editor like CeRegEditor, you
need to connect your device to the PC first. A partnership
is not needed, since the registry editor also works in guest
mode. If you use a registry editor that is installed on the device
itself,
a PC connection is not needed to change the registry.
-
There may be one or more subkeys with
names like "{261675C1-195B-445A-8AE8-3CC763823373}" or such.
Delete all of them completely.
-
Navigate to the following key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows CE
Services\Partners
-
There may be one or more subkeys with
names like "P1", "P2" or such. Delete all of them
completely.
-
Perform a soft reset of the device. If
you use CeRegEditor, you can use the built-in soft reset
function.
After completing all the steps above, you
should be able to establish two properly functioning
partnerships, as with a new device.
Warning: Recreating the partnerships may lead
to lots of duplicate elements. You may want to delete elements
on the device and/or on the PCs prior to recreate the
partnerships. We recommend to backup all data before starting
the above procedure.
